frightful times

Greetings and salutations, everyone; yes, once again it is I, your popular host, Mani the purebred border collie, here today to talk about the frightful times I’ve been having. You may remember me from such posts as “Another Scary Day”, among at least a few others.

Here I am in a characteristic pose.
I was inspecting the creek this morning, after what happened yesterday.

And what happened yesterday, after three dry days in a row,  was very scary indeed. The first thunderstorm started rumbling some time in the evening, and then storm after storm after storm passed over us.

The guy I live with said you could tell the creek flooded a bit last night. You can see the grass matted down along the creek in the first picture.
The pictures on the weather radar page were astonishing, according to the guy I live with. Storms all over the Denver metro area.
It was still thundering at one thirty in the morning, and the guy I live with made me go outside to tinkle, even though I didn’t want to. I was pretty brave, though.
We didn’t get to sleep until about two in the morning.

Then today, there were more severe weather warnings, after a pretty nice morning.
The guy I live with noticed the watch pocket of his jeans was open, and realized he’d lost his “lucky Irish penny” and was really upset about it. I thought he was going to cry. It wasn’t because he believed in luck or thought the penny was lucky; it belonged to his wife, and he carried it around with him all the time.
He said he could always get another one.

And then this happened:

Not much happened, really, except the guy I live with became suddenly much less calm when his phone started beeping warnings about “baseball-sized hail”. That’s when we both went downstairs. I hid under the drawing table in the studio.
The street flooded and some neighbors’ front yards were flooded, but the water receded and when the storm passed over us, I had my dinner, and the guy I live with had his, and then we went out to look at the creek. (The guy I live with said maybe he dropped the penny there this morning, but I don’t think it’s still there.)

Here I am inspecting the creek.  That’s a lot of water, as I’m sure you’ll agree. The guy I live with said that tomorrow is supposed to be dry and breezy. I can hardly wait.

Until next time, then.

That hail looked VERY scary in the news! It looked dangerous! You were fortunate to be inside.

We have had warnings of torrential rain with risk of flooding but have been spared the flooding to date. I am accepting orders for Lucky Irish Pennies – they are not cheap!!! LOL

I continue to be amazed at your garden. A picture of the dry garden remains imbedded on my mind and I find the transformation to green quite astonishing. #

    Stay safe!

Well most of the garden is native grasses, which makes it look very brown in the winter. The guy I live with said he’s going to rethink the idea of having so many grasses because of their tendency to seed everywhere.
Yesterday and the day before were pretty scary, but we got a lot of rain. About 6.3 centimeters
He found the penny just a while ago, under the bookcase in the living room. He could have gotten another one, 1966, cheaply online, but it wouldn’t have been the same.

How wonderful that the lucky penny turned up! Of course another one would not have been the same. That creek really came up fast. We had no rain from Memorial Day until Tuesday, and it’s been raining on and off since (pouring just now). We also had the first thunder of the year and our little dog was very anxious – we give her an anti anxiety medication that is smoothed on her gums and when she hears thunder she runs to stand in front of the cupboard where her medicine is. This is especially impressive since she is by no means a clever dog (unlike you…..).

I’m not sure Rescue Remedy works, but I do have my forts. I can hide in my Upstairs Fort with the internet radio on.
It’s been sunny and dry here for the last two days and this is supposed to continue for a while.

It’s been dry here for several days now. They’re even talking about fire danger in the “high country”. I guess they didn’t get the rain we did.

      • YIKES!!!! Wee hope youss’ will bee safe Mani an Guy! Wee gettin alot of rain outta Minny-soda & Iowa tonite….that will help with crunchy grass! 😉

      • paridevita's avatar paridevita says:

Well that’s the mountains. Maybe they didn’t get the rain up there like we did. Probably not, actually, because the storms seem to form around Idaho Springs or Evergreen, just on the other side of the really high mountains to the west (Mount Evans, Grays Peak and Torreys Peak–the last two were named for botanists), and then come down the canyons into Denver.
Supposed to rain again at the end of the week.

A horribly stressful day for both you and the gardener. The weather is so crazy this year. I hope the garden didn’t sustain too much damage from the hail and that your nerves have calmed. If it’s a slight consolation one of our outdoor cats has had dental surgery and now must stay indoors for two weeks. He is extremely stressed too but as with everything there are better days ahead. Keep calm and carry on.

The guy I live with has a cat who had to have teeth worked on. Long, long ago.
      The storms were really scary.
There wasn’t much damage to the garden, I guess because there wasn’t a lot of wind, and we were really on the edge of the storm.

  7. Iss funny-odd how sum placess get rain an then sum due not Mani!
