the cold

January 16, 2024 8:13 pm

Greetings and salutations, everyone; yes, once again it is I, your popular host, Mani the purebred border collie, here today to tell you about the cold. You may remember me from such posts as “The Blue Hour”, among so many, many others.

Here I am in a characteristic pose.
It was about midnight, and 7 degrees Fahrenheit (-13.8C). I thought I heard something.

After my evening walk last Friday, it began to get very cold here. It was about -7F (-21.6C) in Saturday, with very little snow falling.
It warmed up on Sunday to about 9F (-12.7C), and then got much colder on Monday, down to about -9F (-22.7C), and it snowed more.
I got to go on my morning walks, wearing my boots so my paws stayed safe, but the guy I live with said it was too cold to go on evening walks.

The guy I live with was very glad that he got a new furnace installed last year. It ran a lot, believe me, but we stayed very toasty.

Then something odd happened. I would have thought last night would be cold, and it started out that way, and then began to warm up. I don’t think of it warming up at night, but it did.
By the time we got up this morning it was pretty nice outside, and got to above freezing, so I was able to go on my evening walk again.
It’s going to be mostly (but not completely) nice for the next week, but a colder January than we used to have, according to the guy I live with.

So that was what happened in the last few days. We didn’t do any gardening.
I’ll leave you with a picture of me on my evening walk.

Until next time, then.

  1. The colder weather farther east is delaying the shipping of a package from here to Virginia. It is not very cold here and not too terribly cold there (by local standards), but it is so cold in between that there is concern that the rhizomes that I am sending could be damaged.

    1. The guy I live with says that can be a concern, though sometimes the cold weather doesn’t affect plants in shipment.

      1. Well, even in cold climates, parcels are contained within vehicles, so are somewhat sheltered, even if not insulated. My guess is that they should be fine. But of course, I have never experienced cold weather before, so I have no idea how serious it can be.

      2. I guess in theory. The guy I live with says there’s one way to find out.

By paridevita on January 18, 2024 at 6:39 pm

      3. Well, I do not want to find out with perennials that I am sending to someone else. I will just wait for better weather.

      4. Probably a good idea.

  2. Our judgements of what is cold is so very relative. Your -22C is beyond my imagination and, thankfully, beyond my experience. We had -2C this morning as we headed out to the bakery for the breakfast croissant and we have a heavy frost. Today is forecast to be a cold day, hardly rising above 3C. I’m sure you would feel perfectly comfortable in such temperatures and regard them as a relief from what you are experiencing at present. Keep the booties on the paws for a few more days. I have taken to an extra layer of clothing to stay warm.

    1. The humidity here is up but it doesn’t feel humid, so when it gets cold here we notice it less than places with damp air, according to the guy I live with.
But it was very cold this past weekend.
      Going to be 10C today.

      1. Wet cold is certainly the worst!

      2. The guy I live with said he’d only experienced that one time. It was way below freezing, but the air was super-damp, in this low-lying spot. Very unpleasant.

  3. Last night’s sunsets were pretty spectacular. What a treat to finally be in double digits for this morning’s outing. We were sooo over the sub-zero temps and single digit highs. Don’t get me started on the windchill temps. Talk about brutal! Stay cozy and enjoy your morning and evening sniff-aris.

    1. We fortunately didn’t have much wind here. We are definitely glad the cold has passed, too.

    1. Thanks. The guy I live with said the sunset didn’t turn out quite the way the camera took the picture, but I guess that’s okay.

  7. Winter did finally decide to hit most of us. Hard to take after the previous warmth. We are just climbing out of the deep freeze. Temps close to -50 C (-58 F) including the wind chill. Furnaces have been running none stop as well especially in the garage where our two cats are residing (both are really bored). They spend their days huddled in their heated kitty beds. At least you were still able to get out for walks Mani. Looking forward to a bit more warmth.

    1. The guy I live with said that was really cold.
He said he’d often thought about getting a heater for the garage when his wife used to work out there all the time, making things, but never did.
It was kind of nice here today.
