Greetings and salutations, everyone; yes, once again it is I, Mani the purebred border collie, filling in for the guy I live with, and here today to talk about our latest news. You may remember me from such posts as “Float Like A Feather”, among so many, many others.
Here I am in a characteristic pose.
You can see that it rained here. It rained for about half an hour.
I saw a bear today. I had smelled something very interesting and new along the canal road, on my morning walk, and when we came back home I sensed something highly unusual in our neighbor’s apple tree. No one lives in that house now, but there are still apples, and I saw the bear and jumped about six feet.
It was hard to see, and it was a little bit bigger than I am, which made the guy I live with worry about the mother bear, whom he said we do not want to meet.
I knew there was talk about bears being around here, and now I know it’s not just talk.
Other people came over to look, and I think the Division of Wildlife was called, maybe to relocate the bear, or bears, to a more bear-friendly habitat.
The whole thing was very scary.
The guy I live with spent some time clearing out the border in the “way back”, even though he saw the bear too.
It’s a real mess, as you can tell.
The guy I live with worked on this until he couldn’t work any more. I didn’t think this was all that interesting, because I saw a bear.
There are some things in flower here. I’d show you more pictures than this, but I saw a bear.
This is a very yellow seedling eremurus.
The bear wasn’t yellow. It was black.
This is Lilium martagon, also not a bear, flowering next to the apple tree. The guy I live with said the apple tree didn’t flower this year, so we won’t have bears in the tree.
That’s the plinth for the broken birdbath, if you were wondering.
The guy I live with said plinths won’t attract bears.
That’s really all I have for today. “All” meaning of course I saw a bear. I looked in the neighbor’s tree on my evening walk, hoping not to see a bear, because I’ve already seen one now.
I’ll leave you with a picture of my walking through the sea of smooth brome.
I think I told you that I saw a bear.

Until next time, then.
A bear! You saw a bear! Dear Mani, best of luck with the bear. The guy you live with is very brave to go back out to the “way back” and to clear the border. And he knew there was a bear! I enjoyed seeing the lily. Perhaps now more can grow now that the border is clear. A bear!
Well the bear wasn’t in our yard, so I guess it was okay.
The guy I live with said that apple trees are interesting, because the two in our late neighbors’ yard flower and fruit even though no watering has been done for over a year. There’s another apple tree north of the canal, on what was a farmstead, that prodcues fruit too.
But ours doesn’t always, because it’s a more modern variety, maybe.
It hardly matters, because I saw a bear.
So, let me get this straight. The seedling emerus is yellow. Lilium martagon is blooming. It rained. The broken birdbath is still broken. . . . and that is it?
I guess there was all that stuff, but I saw a bear.
Oh! A BEAR! Oh my! That sounds scary; but I know you are brave.
It was very scary, but I was brave.
I do not doubt it.
I was. I saw a bear, you know.
Oh yes; well, that is a good time to be brave, . . . you know, when you see a bear.
I agree.
A bear Mani! You must have smelled it from quite a ways! I understand they are quite aromatic. True? Well I’m sure you’ll be checking all the trees from now on. Although, you can smell them a mile away. Did you know that a pack of bears is called a sleuth? I’m sure you would rather not come upon one of those. One of my dogs, Flo, chased a sleuth of bears away more than once. You would not have liked her.
There was a smell. On the north side of the canal road, the ground falls away very steeply, and it may be twenty feet down to the creek. I really wanted to go down there and check things out, but the guy I live with said he couldn’t go down there.
There is a way down there, much less steep, but I didn’t want to go that way.
I really extra super don’t want to come upon a sleuth of bears. I might try to herd them, but the guy I live with would totally flip out, and we wouldn’t want that.
Wow! It is exciting to see a bear especially a young one so close by as Mom won’t be far away. I can see why everything else paled in comparison. However, the eremerus and martagon are quite lovely and unlikely to attract a bear’s attention.
It was exciting and scary. I wanted to tell everyone that I saw a bear.
The flowers are okay, I guess.
Yikes!
That’s not exactly what the guy I live with said, but his neighbor had texted him earlier and said she and her daughter had seen the bear farther south, so he was prepared. Sort of.
