characteristic poses

Greetings and salutations, everyone; yes, once again it is I, Mani the purebred border collie, filling in for the guy I live with, and here today to bring you up to date on our weather. You may remember me from such posts as “Up The Wall”, among so many, many others.

Here I am in a characteristic pose.
The guy I live with says it’s quite possible you can see what happened here yesterday.
We got seven inches (17.7cm) of snow.
It isn’t very cold and a great deal of it has already melted. We’re closer to the sun than maybe most people on the planet are. It will be almost 70F (21.1C) next week, so all of the snow will be gone, but it will have melted into the ground rather than just evaporate like it does in winter.
This is of course a huge relief.

March is the snowiest month of the year in Denver. Sometimes we get a lot of snow. Even more than this.

Here I was in a characteristic pose the other day.
It was raining, and I got wet. I didn’t mind that, because I like getting toweled off with old Pottery Barn towels the guy I live with kept just for that purpose.
We didn’t get a lot of rain though.

Today wasn’t much of a day for gardening, which I think you can understand.
I’ll leave you with another characteristic pose. I had to rearrange the couch, of course, to get super comfortable.

Until next time, then.

An occasional couch day has much to recommend it.

You said it, Mani, a huge relief to get that snow! We got a bit less than you, 6”, and it was a nice wet snow, .55” of moisture for us.

Seeing the potted pines, in the second picture, reminded me to tell you that I have some new Pinus dwarfs, thanks to inspiration from your posts. ‘Farmy,’ ‘Pennock Pass Pincushion,’ ‘Thompson Brothers Broom,’ and one on the way, P. sylvestris ‘Moseri’ which, as the guy you live with surely knows, turns golden in winter. I guess I caught a dwarf conifer bug, but am not too worried about it.

The guy I live with says it was a big relief, though now they’re talking about fire warnings again at the end of this week. That seems very hard to believe, that everything could dry out in such a short space of time.
He also used to order a lot of dwarf conifers online, from nurseries that are now gone. Quite a few of them didn’t survive. But he still has a bunch of the ones Jerry Morris did. ‘Farmy’ is one of his.
Most dwarf conifers will be fine in pots all year, though it’s very important to water them a lot in the summer, especially.

        This is indeed crazy weather.

I am planting these conifers out in the garden. (I guess in a decade or so, some may need to be moved.) They were all purchased from Nick’s, which I think gets some of their conifers from a Fort Collins nursery. Hoping the online order, the ‘Moseri,’ is a healthy plant. Might try putting some dwarfs in pots in the future!

There are at least two plants of ‘Farmy’ here; they grow pretty slowly. Some dwarf conifers do get large after a while. But they do still need regular water.
There’s a post, done before the blog got really good because border collies started narrating it, called “Trip To Jerry’s Nursery”. Talk about dwarf conifers.
Nick’s is a very nice place, and the people there are nice, too.

  3. The rain and snow were so very welcomed. I can only hope there will be more in the snowiest month of the year. Take good care, Mani and enjoy your naps!

Hi Bob, thank you so much for your wonderful posts and especially pics of Beautiful Mani! This is such the fresh air and hope for a good spring (not too much plant shock) needed today.

Oh Mani, you are so spoiled. You always look so comfortable passed our on your couch which does seem to be quite often I must say. My great grandfather was a farmer and he used to say that ‘Spring rains/snow ensured a good growing season.’ Based on that bit of wisdom we should have an excellent growing season as we are getting a ton of snow, alternating between super warm days of course. ‘Tis the last of winter so most appreciative.

The guy I live with says he would certainly like to get more snow, or rain. Some kind of normal weather.
The snow melted into the ground, we had a fire weather warning yesterday, have one today, and one tomorrow. This are like the twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth warnings this winter; the wind has been awful, though worse up north, and the temperatures have been twenty degrees (F) above normal almost every day. Very tiresome. But I only had to wear my snow boots once this winter.
