the miserable gardener

I suppose I could buy a telephoto lens and stand out in the back yard all day waiting for the perfect moment, but somehow that doesn’t sound like fun to me.

There are so many orioles in the back yard today that the odds of a male showing up were pretty good, and here he is. I took this, standing in the kitchen doorway, trying not to be seen, with the Coolpix using the telephoto feature; I’m surprised he didn’t freak out when the camera made its little noise.

As many as five female Bullock’s orioles landed on the feeder a little while ago. They fight over the grape jelly, and also have to deal with the white-faced hornets that line the feeder like pigs at a trough. The gaudy male is nowhere in sight. Probably watching TV.

This is the best I could do, as the feeder swings back and forth.
