yet another owl picture

I was planting bulbs, one of my favorite occupations, and heard a huge amount of racket in the tree next door, from blue jays, and noticed a fairly unfriendly face looking down at me.

Great horned owl = nocturnal bird. At least I thought.

Me too. This has never happened before, but they do start hooting in the afternoon. This is to scare edible animals out from their cover so they can be grabbed, I think, and the neighborhood being so overrun with rabbits (my garden included)they start hunting early. The owl pages (owlpages.com) says rabbits are their preferred food.
Only explanation I can think of.
