Greetings and salutations, everyone; yes, once again it is I, Mani the purebred border collie, filling in for the guy I live with, and here today to tell you how soaked we got.
You may remember me from such similarly-themed posts as “Totally Soaked”, among at least a few others.
Here I am in a characteristic pose.
Maybe you can see how refreshed and green everything is. We were soaked by downpours over the last couple of days.
This is of course a huge relief.
We only got a teeny bit of rain today, but the guy I live with didn’t complain at all.
This would be the end of my post, but of course there was a lot of work in the garden today. Way more than I expected.
For one thing, you can see that the ugly pink granite rocks in the enclosure are now gone.
I’ve lost count of the number of errors of judgment, or of taste, that I’ve shown just this summer, but it’s kind of amusing.
The rocks are going to be used as a “wall” in the sand bed, which is shrinking by half, lengthwise. The guy I live with says I won’t be able to see the rocks because of “clever engineering”.
Based on what I said a couple of paragraphs earlier, I have my doubts.
Speaking of engineering, we now have a fortified compound in the “way back” garden.
The guy I live with said that this was only temporary and all the cages will be removed when winter comes (assuming we have a winter), but in the meantime he thought he might submit this design to a national gardening magazine.
The cages are to protect new plants, and emerging seedlings, from rabbits.
You can see how green the buffalo grass is now, and maybe the rabbits will pay more attention to the grass instead of any seedlings not in the cages.
And that’s my news for today. We got a lot of rain, and we have a fortified compound.

We got soaked as well. It was tremendous.
It was totally excellent, wasn’t it?
We had a visitor during the first downpour and the guy I live with got out two things which he said were umbrellas. I’d never seen such a thing before.
Ha! And you and your dog brethren and sistren acquired that wet dog smell, I’ll bet, which we hadn’t experienced for ages. Glorious.
That is great news! I’m ready for the rain to return here in PNW. So tired of watering…
It is. We no longer have anything like reliable rainfall here, and autumn is often very dry.
So this downpour was very welcome.
Glad you received a right proper soaking. We only received a light sprinkle but I’ll happily accept all moisture. Looks like we’re back to summer now for a few days. Thank goodness there’s ‘only’ 37 days left until autumn arrives. It can’t come soon enough for us.
The guy I live with says the storm went south of US 285, and then headed east-northeast, like to Cherry Creek Reservoir.
He also says the distribution of rain this summer seems unfair.
I would agree with the man you live with. It’s been more than sparse since I moved in back in December.
The guy I live with is kind of pessimistic about this coming autumn and winter, but I guess we’ll see.
I’m so tired of being so hot almost every single day.

Please tell us about the sand bed! What is thriving there? How is this clever engineering of rocks going to work? Why is the bed being reduced to half? Can we have some pictures, maybe when it is done? I am trying a sand bed (former sandbox that is too much work to dismantle) this year for the first time, and have been astonished at how some plants thrive in straight sand.
Well the sand bed has been kind of a flop, according to the guy I live with. It was a sort of berm. The top part of it was too dry to support plant life, and the north part was too shady, so all the sand and gravel is being scraped up and used elsewhere.
That’s why there’s going to be a retaining wall of rocks, so that the sand doesn’t slide down.
The guy I live with says sand has more oxygen than clay, allow more rapid infiltration of water, and holds water longer than clay, but at a greater depth.
Still, the sand bed might go, considering all the remodeling that’s gone on here.
