nighttime visitor

Even this creature wouldn’t stand still for a photograph. It was making pretty good time on the flagstone.

Both slugs and snails are rare visitors to the garden here. I understand that the snails are hitchhiking on nursery stock. I just let them go about their business because no doubt they find the conditions here inhospitable in the extreme.

This is Helix aspera, the common garden snail; I’ve included a picture comparing a shell with that of the Roman snail, Helix pomatia. Suddenly I’m thinking of escargot en brioche at Le Central …. The Roman snail-shell came from a friend in England, where the snails are protected; they were introduced by the Romans for the best of reasons.

owls

Just walked out into the back garden and there was an owl sitting on one of the posts. I guess if I have the little lawn back there for the rabbits (so they’ll eat the grass and not my plants), it’s for the owls too.

A pair of great horned owls has been in this neighborhood for years. Normally the only time we hear hooting is in the winter, but this summer the hooting has started in the afternoon every day. The owls sit in the cottonwood out in the field.

When the owl flew away I walked out into the field, and there it was.
